Alleghany County Historical Book #325My Father, W. B. Fender, was born April 1, 1901, in Alleghany County,North Carolina, at the homeplace in Whitehead Community. He was theson of Colonel G. and Ellen Richardson Fender.
Daddy attended school at Whitehead and Pine Swamp. He told many fondtales of his school days at Whitehead, my favorite being when heclimbed all the way up under the building to hide, and the problemsthey had getting him out, and then the punishment he had to face forsuch behavior. He managed to make many visits back to his landmark, taking pictures, and showed much interest in this building beingrenovated for a community building in recent years.
Daddy, being the eldest of a family of six, had many responsibilitiesat home while Grandpa was away teaching school. When Grandpa washome, Daddy accompanied him to the fields while Herman helped Grandmawith the chores around the house. Herman was the next in line, followed by Wilmer, Eula, Edith and Clayton.
At about age twenty, Daddy ventured to Utah and found work pickingfruit on farms near Salt Lake City for a while, and then moved on toCalifornia. There he worked on the railroad.
After a few years in California, he returned to North Carolina and in1925 was married to Ardie Petty, daughter of W. G. (Grennie) Petty andEva Irwin Petty. They made their home in the Stratford Community ofAlleghany. Daddy spent many hard, but happy, hours working on hisfarm. In those days, times were hard, so he had to find other sourcesof income by doing carpentry and masonry work, and helping neighbors.Mama loved to cook, keep house, crochet, and being a loving neighborto everyone.
One of the most interesting occupations Daddy had was the FenderTrucking Co. with his brother, Wilmer. They hauled produce, lumberand other items to and from various places. One story, often heard byfamily members, was the fun they had hauling the stone for theGreystone Inn at Roaring Gap, North Carolina from Surry County, andthe lum
